When Is The Durian Season In Pahang And The Best Time To Eat Great Durians?

If you are looking for some durians to eat this year, then the best time is July 2025.


Most durians lovers and enthusiasts are actually experts at knowing when is the best time of the year to eat durians.


Bentong and Raub is famous for its musang king and during season we see a flood of durian lovers to our farms and our town.



Musang king, best time to eat durians


Our family has been running a durian farm for more than 40 years and I am now the 2nd generation to look after the trees.


Over the years I do notice some differences compared to those good old' days.


Durians Are Now Year Round But With A Major Season And Some Smaller Seasons


Due to the advancement of fertilization techniques and agricultural science, it is now possible to have 2-3 seasons a year for durians.


If you look back to the 80s and 90s you will hear folks talking about durian season. To them it was once a year.


Nowadays you can see durians year round. If you go to SS2 and certain areas in KL you can see durians almost every month. Sometimes you wonder whether durian is a seasonal fruit or not.


The reason why they are able to supply you with durians year round is because they take fruits from all over Malaysia and also Thailand. Each state has a slightly different timing. For example Johor will have a different timing than Pahang.


Thailand will also have a different timing than the states in Malaysia. It is not too far away from Malaysia and thus Thai durians can be brought in quite fast over the border to our local stores.


Today, it is common knowledge that we have one major season and 1 or 2 smaller seasons round the year.


  • April May is a smaller season

  • July is the Major season

  • Perhaps November December we will have another smaller season


Pahang Musang King Are Still The Best


Through friends and also visitors to my farm, I learn that no matter what, the Musang King in Pahang are still among the best Musang King in the world.


I think it is because of the soil and climate which is very specific to our region.


Just like Bentong ginger which is unmatched by its quality to other ginger, the Musang King in Pahang especially the Bentong and Raub region still taste the best.


If a Musang King is good I notice this phenomenon always with my visitors...


They will finish the Musang King up to the very last pulp.


Timing Is Very Important To Taste The Best Durians


I want to share with you some very important facts that many do not know.


If you want to taste some of the best Musang King in the whole year, you need to know 2 things:


  1. The location

  2. The timing


You will get the location right if you come to Bentong or Raub as we are the best place to grow tasty Musang King.


However, the timing is a bit tricky as not many people know about this.


Let me show you with a chart below.

Every season has its beginning, middle and end.


A season typically last from 6-8 weeks.


Early fruits and late fruits are usually not so nice. Most durian farmers and wholesalers know this. Some of the public also know this especially the old timers.


I'm not very sure why this is the case but some intelligent guess can attribute it to how nature works as well as the impact of fertilizers.


The bell curve above looks like our productivity in life. When you are younger you are less productive and earn less. In your prime you tend to earn more and when you are older your productivity also goes down.


The same thing applies to durians in a tree when it comes to taste of the durian each season.


The usage of granular fertilizers can improve the taste of durians but after they are applied, it can make the fruits hard and the ground hard as well.


So the fruits that are near the beginning of the season are closer to the time when the farmer last apply fertilizers.


As more fruits drop and the last 20% remains, the farmer also applies chemical fertilizer to strengthen the durian tree and prepare it for the next season. This makes the fruits and pulps in the durian a bit harder.


Thus, the best time to eat a great Musang King durian or any durian is at the peak of the season which is the middle of the bell curve.


1st - 2nd week : Less nice

3rd - 6th week : The best

7th - 8th week : Less nice


Another great thing about the peak season is there is an abundance of supply.


This is where the law of supply and demand helps the consumer. Because there is abundance of supply, the price goes down.


Musang King price typically ranges from RM 38- RM 78 per kg. During peak season you can see the cheapest Musang King go down to as low as RM 20 per kg.


The same pricing applies to other durians as well during their peak season.


Come And Taste Musang King In Bentong


Bentong is not that far from KL. About an hour's drive.
